It is opened the year round to Visitors, who from their first entry through the handsome huge wrought iron gates, which once graced the famous old Charity Hopsital in New Orleans, gasp with delight at the sheer charm and exquisite beauty. Winding woodland roads wrap around trees hundreds of years old, low blooming shrubs and wild flowers nestle dose to mother earth, while the danling white Cherokee roses reach heavenward as they cling and climb on stately pines in their efforts to greet the clear blue skies. Suddenly the woodland road comes abruptly to an end and one finds oneself gazing upon fantastically beautiful formal gardens, surrounding the charming manor home of Dr. Irwin. The architectural styling of the home is low and spreading, white framed, brick trimmed, and winged to allow the delightful breezes which constantly blow from Jourdan River on whose banks the estate lies, to reach every room of the home. Charming early American and European furnishings are used throughout the home, which is fastidious in'minutest detail, with priceless heirlooms and antiques garnered from all parts of the globe by its owner. The wagon' made the rounds of the town and an ice cream cone (with plenty of ice creami) sold for five cents. The man shown in the picture is Sidney Mianieri, who today resides on Union Street with his family. round the home providing resting and lounging areas for visitors amid the most luxuriant flowering blooms all casually set with fine wrought iron garden furnishings. A pool, fountain and lily pond, in addition to a rough house where friends are constantly entertained at the most sumptuous barbecues and parties are other features which charm the guests of this popular bachelor host. The gardens of Darwood are most famous for the thousands of species of rare blooming camellias and azaleas. From all parts of the country thousands of visitors annually view the wondrous plants which bloom with such perfection and profusion. In addition the fabulous blooming delicately flowered Dogwood, in dainty pastel pinks and creamy whites spread umbrellas of shade from their wide spread branches. Tung oil trees with their exquisite blooms are also in abundance, and the air is heavy with the sweet scent of gardenias, jasmine and roses. Water blooms have not been overlooked in these gardens where oriental pond lilies, lavender hued water hyacinths and lotus blossoms languidly laze on the calm surface of the lily ponds. Iris with their rainbow hues are in abundance edging the ponds and peeking from garden walks which trail in and about the spacious grounds. The banks of the river form high bluffs.
