HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
OLD SHIELDSBOROUGH on the 21st of April 1818 officially incorporated and named by Act of the first general assembly of the State of Mississippi. In Hancock County this region was originally inhabited by the Choctaw Indians and others under the Spanish Dominion 1540-1699; French on April 8, 1699-1779, Spain 1795 - At Natchez - 1798. April 7, 1798 the Mississippi Territory was created and Winthrop Sargent appointed the first territorial governor. Mississippi admitted to the Union by Act of Congress on December 10, 1817, the twelfth state to enter the Union.
