0 THE IMPACT: J The Walter Anderson Museum of Art fulfills the ardent desire for a cultural resource in the Gulf Coast area. Its focus upon a local artist who is rapidly becoming recognized as an American Master, will influence many painters, students and scholars of varying disciplines to come to Ocean Springs for study and research. Indeed, posthumously, Walter Anderson has the potential of catapulting the Coastal region and the State into national prominence. The cultural consequences will generate an economic impact. Inasmuch as Shearwater Pottery, owned and operated by the Peter Anderson family, entertains approximately 6500 visitors a year, it is reasonable to expect that the museum would attract an added 9-10 visitors per day for 365 days. Thus 10,000 visitors is a conservative figure of projected growth. Certainly, tourism, a major coastal industry, stands to inherit handsomely as a result of the museum’s presence. COSTS: Building Cost: 7000 sq. feet approximately $1,050,000 In November 1988 a capital campaign with a goal of $750,000 was initiated. The feasibility study established this as an achievable goal with the prospects of going over goal. The difference between the projected cost and the campaign goal can be reconciled by: going over goal -=5J building the museum in phases building a smaller museum Foundation grants
