Bay St. Louis & Waveland
Thoreau found Walden Pond a quiet, tranquil place and he told millions of people about it. Residents of Hancock County are much like Thoreau in telling stories of sunkissed beauty in their corner of the universe.
The Mississippi Sound and St. Louis Bay bring the sea breezes late at night and during tne day those same shores are filled with fisherman and bathers. Due to its mean temperature of 68 degrees, fishing and swimming are year-round activities for residents and tourists.
Situated directly on the banks of the Mississippi Sound, Waveland and Bay St. Louis have all the beauty, educational opportunities and industrial potential to make them even greater cities.
St. Stanislaus, founded in 1854, is the oldest educational institution on the Gulf Coast. It offers educational and spiritual guidance for boys from the sixth to twelfth grades. The school has built a reputation for quality education conducted by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. A new air-conditioned school and Student Union, a residence hall containing study bedrooms with private accommodations and an Olympic size swimming pool are the newest additions to grace the campus. In addition to classroom work, the individual student is guided in independent study projects. Christ Episcopal day school lends itself to the educational atmosphere of the area in locating hidden talents in boys and girls and developing them to maximum potential. The staff and facilities are second to none.
Waveland, twin sister to Bay St. Louis, is located a few miles to the south and its quiet, Southern atmosphere is envied by visitors and enjoyed by residents.
Bay St. Louis has a mayor and two commissioners while Waveland has a mayor and five aldermen. Hancock County’s Board of Supervisors governs the county. All three boast of total population of 17,387.
Hancock County offers incentives to industries interested in the area. Over 1,198 acres of land await the potential builder in a well kept industrial park.
As it is, Bay St. Louis industries are well-diversified. Some of the products of the area are: enameled steel construction panels, component house parts, leather goods, frozen foods, a publishing house, industrial electric panels, aluminum door frames, candy, forest products, poultry products, seafood, cattle, dairy products, gas well product, construction and many other goods and services.
Another fact of the Bay St. Louis area is its easy access to large industrial centers of the South. U.S. Hwy 90, U.S. 11 West, State 603, 43, 607, 53, and Interstate 10 connect Hancock County to all major points in the South and Southwest.
Civic pride should be a large part of an individual’s life in any city, and Bay St. Louis and Waveland have many organizations dedicated to making life better for residents. Some of the groups are: Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Jaycees, Garden Club, Masonic Order, Eastern Star, Knights of Columbus (with auxilliary), American Legion and aux. 4-H Clubs, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Sea Scouts, Parents Clubs and PTA, Hancock Art League and many more.
Agriculture is booming in Hancock County too. Dairy farms, beef products, cattle, swine, poultry farms and row crops add more each year to the County’s annual income and the income of the residents. In addition, yields from the timber crop run into millions each year with pulpwood, poles, pilings and saw logs the main products.
If the curious tourist is tired of museums, beaches, and candy shops, the place to go is the NASA Test Facility. It is open daily with organized tours for those interested.
