At Long Beach, the beautiful “Gold Coast” of fine homes had ceased to exist on August 18. The scene m the top photo was repeated again and again. Only the skeleton and wreckage of Ramada Inn stood facug U. S. 90. Trip lett-Day Drug Store, the A & l\ Morgan and Lindsay and other stores were demolished. National Pood Store was demolished. Matem’s Auto Supply on Jeff Davis ave, next to Hancock Bank was demolished.
These teenagers came from Pensacola to retiuild the ftiptist church at Henderson pt. They are quartered at First Z&ptist Church of Lang Beach.

Just when things seemed worst, dawn broke and Mrs. Budd met Father O’Malley who offered a hand of mercy and the use of part of the church site of St. Thomas for her relocation. It was decided to buy a trailer and set up shop again in the parking lot near the ruins of the church. A necessary, and necessarily thrown together, document was signed by city officials and the Driest giving her permission to do so.

Before any further steps could be taken, Providence (remember him?) shone forth again and the present location of Budd’s was found. By sheer force of courage 10 years of lost investments began the slow process of being revived. Mrs. Budd proudly states that, “on October 15 we were the first store on the coast fo reopen. Much of the carpenter work we did ourselves.”
