REPORT ON THE BAXTER COLLECTION The Baxter Collection, sponsored by the Hancock County Historical Society, was presented for public viewing as a Bicentennial Exhibition in the Louise Crawford Room of the Hancock County Library beginning November first through November 11, 1976. The exhibit consisted of historical memorabilia and family records and mementoes belonging to Lionel Baxter, a member of an early Hancock County family residing in the Logtown-Pearlington area. His inquisitive as well as acquisitive instincts were stimulated at the tender age of eight by an old soldier, his Confederate grand-father Francis Marion Baxter, whose tales of the Civil War enthralled the boy. Oleah Delph was asked to serve as Chairman. Needless to say the response of every one contacted to bring the program to fruition was most gratifying. Mayor Warren Carver extended full support of the City Department of Sanitation and Public Grounds for the conveyance of materials needed for the display. Mr, Felix Seegur, Superintendent of this department picked-up and returned to the designated lenders - 12 tables, 15 pieces of glass and the massive framed map (an item in the collection showing the home-sites of the early families of South Carolina and Georgia in 1780). The Library staff was most cooperative, and particularly was Kathy Pierce, Reference Librarian, who was selected to do publicity but inadvertently overlooked the fact that the Historical Society sponsored the event. (Sea Coast Echo, October 28, 1976) Worthy of praise for their participation were the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.) members who served in a security capacity during Lionel's absence. Members of the Historical Society gave willingly and generously of their time and energy especially Peggy Gibbens, Evelyn Griffith and our president, Norton Haas. Their proferred advice and direction were appreciated. Lionel Baxter planned and executed the lay-out. Others who served actively were Helene Price and Mary Autenreith in charge of refreshments for the opening night reception honoring Mr. and Mrs. Baxter. Joe Pilet registered the guests. Jerome Boudreaux and Juanita Stichman furnished the fresh flowers and greeneries for decoration. Alberta Beyer served in many areas too numerous to mention., Lewis Fernandez furnished the glass case which housed some of the rare books and monies.
