A SHORT SUMMARY OF DANIELL FAMILY HISTORY Early years in America From Robert Daniell (1646-1718) to William Daniell (1743-1840) By: Garry Earl Daniell December 15, 1995 This narrative is a brief summary from the records relating to the lineage of the Daniell family that I have accumulated over the years. They are a combination of information provided by other family members (published and unpublished), publications written concerning local histories, family bibles, and public records (wills, land deeds, county marriage records, etc.). The summary traces lineage from Robert to William by direct bloodline. Siblings are referenced by number, but are not listed in this summation. BACKGROUND The Daniell family of Georgia (and the Carolina's) originally came from England where the family?s genealogy is traceable to the Knights of the Norman Conquest. They were originally from Normandy, France and were Huguenots. They arrived in England with the Norman Conquest in 1066 led by William, Duke of Normandy (also Known as William the Conqueror). The family was always faithful supporters of the Crown and much favored by the Houses of Stuart and Tudor. There are references in some of the research performed by other members of the family that Robert Daniell who came to the Carolina?s in 1669 was a descendant of the Prince of Wales, but I have not seen documentation or lineage charts to substantiate this claim. The name was originally spelled De Anvers. Down through the centuries it was changed to Danyell and again changed to Daniell in the time period from 1590 to the mid-1650?s. There is a family tradition that during the War of Roses (1649) there was a split in the family between those who supported the traditional throne (House of Stuart) and those supporting Oliver Cromwell. Two brothers disagreed, the one supporting Cromwell dropping the second ?I? from the name. Each declared that from that time forward they would no longer be kin. Cromwell controlled England from the time of his execution of King Charles I in 1649 until his death in 1658. Cromwell?s son Richard attempted to continue the reign, but by that time the Royalist powers were strong enough to force him to flee the country. All supporters of Cromwell were forced into exile. Roger Daniel (one ?I?) arrived in Virginia around this time. The Daniel?s of Virginia claim that their ancestor supported Cromwell and it is assumed that this is the brother who dropped the second I.
