the southeast edge of the stoim, the part passing over us then, was the most powerful. Oar tension mounted as we waited for the worse to "be over.
About 10 minutes 'before the eye was "scheduled," our massive front doors crashed in, frames and all. We heard part of the roof peeling from the front of the house, and rainwater 'began pouring in. Some of the furniture seemed to float as it was crashed against walls while the wind tore at the openings that had been made. We rushed the children upstairs, put on their life preservers, and ■began to gather flashlights and radios to take upstairs with us.
John and I stood on the stairs for a long moment as we watched our home "being violated. We dismissed the house as an extension of our lives--perhaps as one sheds a cancerous limb--and we began to concentrate on survival. The struggle "began at that moment to keep from "being inundated "by the stuff of life! to stay alive in this log jam of confusion "became our only instinct. We felt the serenity of a combined strength that could fight even the awesomeness of the elements.
We all gathered in the hall leading to an upstairs window on the lee side of the house. We heard explosions all around us and felt a strange floating or flying sensation "beneath us. The house was then pushing against a tree. We couldn't find the stairs, and the front of the upstairs

Hie, Charlie and I managed to stay together as John, Tary, and our friends were separated from us.
