16 artists’ works will adorn new bridge

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is announcing the selection of 22 final artwork pieces as part of a Bay of St. Louis Bridge enhancement project. Bronze plaques will project the artist renderings and will be attached to balustrades on the south side of the pedestrian lane. The artwork will also denote the 1/1 Oth mile locations along the bridge.
The selected artwork, which was judged by an independent panel appointed by the Mississippi Arts Commission, will be transposed from 2-dimensional contour line drawings to 3-dimensional bronze plaques and finished in low relief bronze. The 16 artists who have been selected to display the 22 pieces of art are:

The selected artwork will be on display for public viewing at the MDOT Bridge Fest tent immediately following the Bridge Opening Ceremony.
"The amount of participation in the artwork contest for the bridge was amazing," said Southern District Transportation Commissioner Wayne Brown. "This is yet anoth-
er historical moment in the re-opening of the Bay of St. Louis Bridge." Brown also expressed tremendous gratitude to the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce for their assistance and enthusiasm in the selection process.
A $500 award has been offered for each selected drawing. The artist's signature and name in block letters will be part of each plaque. The plaques will be produced from nearly 8,000 pounds of bronze bearing plates that were recovered

"The most intriguing part of this is when the bridges were being demolished for new construction to begin, MDOT made it a point to retrieve the bronze bearing plates," said Executive Director Larry L. "Butch" Brown.	"Then
Commissioner Wayne Brown had the idea of symbolically tying the old bridge to the future by utilizing these materials which would showcase our local
artists' talents as well as reconnect our coastal residents."
The $268 million bridge replacement project is a part of MDOT's continuing efforts to assist the coast in rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. MDOT plans to open two lanes of traffic on the bridge May 17 at 2 p.m.
Artistic bronze plaques will also be incorporated into the design of the Biloxi Bay Bridge and information about that call to artists process will be forthcoming.
