There are many records to confirm the bonds of Robert Daniell with King William III (reigned 1689-1702), Queen Mary II (reigned 1689-1694), and Queen Anne (reigned
1702-1714).
There are several coats of arms listed for the Daniell family. They vary somewhat as was the custom when the a marriage occurred with another amnigerous (arms-bearing) family. It is customary to quarter the arms with that of the spouse. A common feature in each of them is the ?charge? ? a furilly sable and a fleur de lis on the shoulder. The sable appears both over the shield and within it. All bear a silver sable and the shield is quartered with red in the 1st and 4th quarter and gold in the second and third. Color meanings are: gold denotes generosity, valor, or perseverance; red represents fortitude and creative power; and silver means serenity and nobility. All also bear the same motto ?PRO FIDE ET PATRIA" meaning ?for faith and country?.
Over the years there have been many misspellings of the last name for this branch of the family (Daniel, Daniels, Daniells, Dannell, Dannel, etc.). This has been partially due to carelessness by officials upon recording documents, authors when writing various books, and probably illiteracy. When signed documents are inspected, all of the family members discussed below signed their last name ?Daniell?.
There was a brief period (around the 1920?s and 1930?s) during which the children of George Newton ?Newt? Daniell (1851-1923) and Margaret ?Maggie? Lelia (Thomas) Reed (1875-1957) dropped the second ?I? in the name. As told to me by my parents and aunts, there was a man who they considered of questionable character (due to use of alcohol) living in Smyrna, Georgia whose last name was spelled Daniell. The sisters of the family (Nellie Leona and Doris Allene) convinced the other children that they should change the spelling of the last name to Daniel so that no one would think that they were related and confuse them with the other family. When I asked who this person was, I was never given a name and was told that he was not related. They later changed their last names back to ?Daniell?.
I was also told that the Daniell?s buried in both Smyrna Cemeteries were not related to us. Through recent research, I have learned that all of these persons were our cousins and descendants of William (1743-1840) and/or Stephen Daniell (1809-1858).
GOV. ROBERT DANIELL (1646-1718)
Bom April 20, 1646 in Uanddewi Brefi, Cardigan Co., Wales. Died May 1, 1718 , (72 yrs) at his home on Daniell Island, Charleston, South Carolina. His birth is on record at St. David Parish on the coast of the Bristol Channel.
His parents were Robert Daniell and Margaret James. She was the daughter of Daniell James who recorded the birth of the child in the Parish records.
August, 1669 - sailed from Plymouth, Devon Co., England for America with 3 ships. On the way they stopped at Barbados, replaced a ship lost in a storm upon their arrival at Barbados then on to America. A hurricane was encountered at the Bahamas, one ship lost its course in the storm and another wrecked. The party landed in Charleston Harbor at what is now called Charles Towne Landing in April of 1670. The Ship that was lost in the storm arrived May, 1670. The town was moved to its present site in the spring of 1680, and was originally called Oyster Point.
