This paper was initially typed in January 1978. Since then, we have collected additional information on this family that is now being included in this second rendition. You may have noticed that we have not given complete citations for every piece of information, especially census records. The reason simply being, it would have taken much longer to complete this history. There is enough information here that any “rookie” genealogist can find the specific source if they make even a half-hearted effort.
If anyone thinks this report is “perfect” they will be disappointed. This type of research is much too complex. Much of the above information was supplied by close family members and was often done from “memory.” Because of this there are possibly some mistakes, especially with those bom around 1900 and later. This is not to mention possible typing errors and mistakes we found in some of the many sources used. Can someone do better than what we have presented - of course, and we welcome anyone who is willing to help. If you find an error, it was most likely one of your own relatives who gave it to us.
Rest assured, 99.9 % of the information in this paper is accurate!
In our forty years of researching this family, we have collected many documents to support the information in this paper. We did not find this information on the internet unless stated so. We used original sources such as bible records, census records, church records, etc. We also have many photos of the people named in this report that are stored in a file that contains the research material for this family.

A few days after we completed this McArthur history, we found a direct descendant of John “Jack” McArthur as discussed on page 5. Mrs. Pam Broussard-Disukes of St. Louis, MO told us that this John McArthur was her direct ancestor. She said he married or had a common law relationship with a mulatto named Frances “Fanny” Butler or Fitzpatrick. They had five children to include: Eldridge, Hannah, Louis, Edith, and Valentine McArthur. Pam has given us much additional information on this family. She found a lawsuit in 1858 in Tallapoosa County, AL where John McArthur was being sued by Walter Carrie of Hancock County, MS over the “ownership” of Fanny McArthur, wife of John McArthur. Walter was the administrator of the estate of Henry Carrie. This suit is rather long and complicated, but interesting. Pam also has documentation on the ownership of Fanny by the Carrie family of Pearlington, MS and later, her “sale” to James and John McArthur in 1829 or 1830.
