tContinued from Page 7) luin Weston Homestead on Main Street, a time and weather mellowed twelve room plantation type cottage, surrounded by giant oaks planted by the Westons, magnolias, sweet olive, wax myrtle, camellias and palmettos. In the yard is the old stone horse mounting block for the ladies, having stood in one spot so long the spreading roots of a huge oak have grown under it and have lifted it off the ground. Even the gate in the fence that fronts the property is over a hundred years old.
In this house were born all of Henry Weston’s nine grandchildren — six boys and three girls. It is now occupied by a Weston first cousin, Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Otis, their son Henry Otis and his daughter Carolyn who represents the fifth generation. This writer wondered where, when moving its contents, they will find a modern home with a ceiling high enough to accommodate the nine foot high four poster bed that is one of its many heirlooms.
On an adjoining Main Street property is the home of Mrs. Pauline Weston, now ninety years old, an aunt both of Mrs. Otis and Roland Weston of Bay St. Louis. It was built for her by her husband. She was carried across its threshold the night of her wedding and has lived there ever since. In showing the Down South writer-photographer team through her delightful old home with its seven rooms, one paneled in curley pine, six fireplaces and 12 roomy closets, she pointed with a twinkle in her eye to several wicker seat oak kitchen chairs. “You could buy them for 75 cents apiece when I was a bride,” she commented.
She calls her home “Sunshine Cottage” and it is a perfect name for the house of this cheerful, alert and active nonagenerian whose roots of a lifetime will be torn loose when the time comes to leave this place that enshrines her memories.
Then there is the old Koch homestead surrounded by the largest camellia trees this writer has ever seen. Built by the original Koch who came from Denmark and who sailed schooners between Log-town and New Orleans, this home was last lived in by Mrs. Nettie Koch until she died at the age of 94 in 1955. She was for many years a well known volunteer weather reporter and sent her (Continued on Page 26)
