The Stennis Space Center (SSC) history program was initiated by Center Director Roy Estess on January 14, 1990. In keeping with the NASA history program’s missions, the SSC History Office was commissioned to put forth concentrated efforts in collecting and organizing information to preserve and properly document the rich history of this NASA center.
PRESERVING THE PAST
To accomplish these goals, the SSC History Office created a computerized data base as a mechanism to manage its historical records collection as well as to support the writing of histories. The materials collected are arranged and described according to accepted archival practice and inventoried in a comprehensive traditional guide which includes background information on the collection.
Through close coordination with NASA Headquarters’ History Division, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, sister NASA centers and local historical societies, the SSC History Office functions as an informational clearinghouse and directory providing additional documentation from a variety of sources.
Further development of the history project includes a partnership agreement with the University of Southern Mississippi in providing academic assistance in oral history interviews, archival processing and editorial services. The SSC History Office is also providing research and technical assistance for a narrative history of SSC, development of historical papers and a video covering the 30 years of the center’s history.
As a service to on-site researchers and history scholars, the SSC History Office offers research assistance during its normal business hours. The office is located in Building 1100, across from the technical library. The SSC History Office is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For additional information, call (601) 688-2643 or write NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center, History Office, Stennis Space Center, MS 39529-6000.
