10 FOOT DEPTH 100 FEET WIDE TO INCREASE NAVIGABILITY PERHAPS l*f FILES TO OPEN OPPORTUNITIES FOR TIHBER AND CHARCOAL STUDIED September 11, 1915 Times Picayune - Sunday, September 19, 1915 - pi1* col 2 ENGINEERS STUDY FORT BAYOU DREDGING Ocean Springs, Kiss., Sept. 18, 1915 — Studying the possibilities of dredging the channel entrance at Fort Bayou, W. W. Toxey of the Government Engineer’s Office in Mobile, spent Saturday (September 11, 1915). in Ocean Springs taking soundings and investigating the commercial possibilities here. Fort Bayou is navigable for a distance of 1*+ miles and its course lies through a region of great timer and charcial possibilities. At the entrance, however, is a mud bar about 200 feet wide, which practically makes the stream unnavigable. Only about 7,000 yards need to be dredged out, it was estimated, to give a channel 100 feet wide by 10 feet deep. Imports of lumber and other articles to Ocean Springs in the year are as follows: Lumber &33>960 Brick S7,600 Shingles $13,*+00 Logs $7,000 On a conservative estimate there will be a 25 per cent increase in these commodities with an open channel because of the cheaper freight rate. Just as soon as the channel is secured, a public pier will be built by local enterpi'Ize and certain New Orleans - J-'obile xreight lines will make a port of call of Ocean Springs.
