1880s-era gowns recall time when city was created

?	WAVELAND ? Indians dressed* in red and gold danced in dazzling sunlight here Saturday afternoon before an audience of ladies resplendent in gowns from another century.
Waving flags and pompons which matched their outfits, the band of St. Clare School dancers and drummers 100 strong were among 40 units in the parade to celebrate Waveland?s centennial.
Several women among the dignitaries on the City Hall reviewing stand were dressed in period costumes, but noticably absent were the beards, mustachios and mutton-chop sideburns which had been decreed as de riguer for men during the centennial year.
City Clerk Arcelyn ?Dee" Dastu-gue wore an 1888 cotton lace and tucks gown which had been created as a bride?s maid dress by the late Mina Meyers, mother of Mrs. Phil Lagasse.
Mrs. Jo Ann Lagasse, Hancock County?s Retired Senior Volunteers Program director, wore another peri-
od outfit also created by Mrs. Meyers.
The women who brought the period flavor of 1888 to the parade included Cecile Galivan, Thelma Voelkel, Edith Maihles, Muriel Zinc, Louise Williams, Gwen Ishem, Jennie Ortis and Dot Feaheny.
Still sporting the full beard seen on many male participants in centennial events earlier in the year was Barry Richardson who said, ?We?re going to have a shaving party at the Legion Hall tonight.?
Saturday?s program, the last in a series of centennial events, included a red beans and rice dinner for $1 and fireworks display at 8:30 p.m. on the Garfield Ladner Pier.
Celebrated earlier was the burial of a time capsule on the front lawn of City Hall.
The capsule contains the names of every citizen in the city, copies of the tax rolls, utility rolls and other records, Mayor John Longo said.
Long said from his home Saturday he regretted having to miss Saturday?s program, ?But I?m happy to hear the event was such a success.?
Longo was released from Hancock Medical Center Saturday after suffering what he described as a light stroke
