The only request was to bring the matter to ( a vote to obtain the will of the majority of the people. Those volunteers circulating the petition made a record of the reasons given as to why some citizens signed, and others refused to sign. ThoseArefusing to sign gave some revealing and shocking reasons. They are listed: 1. We are in business, to sign the petition might cause the current administration to inflict reprisals. 2. We are on wellare and are afraid to sign as we have been told this QQOCSC cause our names to be removed from relief. We cannot run such a risk that might make our families gaffer. 3. We find it hard to pay our taxes. If our names appeared on the petition it might mean that our taxes would be raised and we would be worse off than ever. We have been told that our Social Security payments would be stopped if we signed the petition. We depend oij/this money. 5. We work for the city and our jobs might be lost if we signed the petition. 6. We depend on our pay j^check from the school board. The School Board is opposed to any change. We are sorry. 7. We do not think Mayor Carver has done a good job. We wouldn't want to do anything to help him .maitr Iri aiTlMF^ 8. We like the system as it is — we can get whatever we want without all that red tape. The present administration has never turned us down. *
