Sketches Of Two Bay St. Louis Citizens Who Achieved International Acclaim
CAROLINE D'ALE SNEDKCKER Author
Having lived and written in Bay St. Louis since 1918, Carolyn Dale Snedecker was claimed as a resident author.
She was born in New Harmony, Indiana, the town settled by the famed Robert Owen, her great 'grandfather.
She wrote from the age of nine year* first verse, then stories pub. lished in magazines, and finally fifteen historical novels, some of which have remained in print for forty years. At the age of fourteen her family maved to Cincinnati. There besides her schooling, she attended the college of Music, from where she was graduated with honors and won a gold medal. She lived in Cincinnati until her marriage to Reverend Charles Snedecker, when they moved to Long Island New York, where they lived for many years, until his health failed. They then came to Bay St. Louis, where they spent the rest of their lives.
RICHARD BARTHE SCULPTOR
Richard Barthe, an internationally known sculptor, was bom in Bay St. Louis, in the year 1901. He was taken out of school while in the seventh grade, to help support his widowed mother’s fam. ily.
A resident of New Orleans, who spent his summers in Bay St. Louis, gave him employment and when the summer was over, took Barthe with him to New Orleans.
From earliest childhood, without the benefit of instructions, he spent every spare moment drawing. His work was first noticed as outstanding, by a trades^ man in New Orleans, who dis. played it in his shop window, and thus brought it to public no. tice, which resulted in an opportunity to study in Chicago. There he twice won the Rosenwald Fel. lowship, which took him to New York, where his talent won for him

At least, it’s worth a try, look real hard. The building shown was the home of the late Mr. Robert Murtagh.

the Guggenheim fellowship, first to Paris, and following that to work without instruction.
He has exhibited in eighteen of the United States and abroad, has had two honorary degrees conferred upon him, has won the “Audubon Artists” gold medal, is the only negro whose work is exhibited in the National Hall of Fame and has had commissions in Haiti, India and France.
Among his subjects are Kath. erine Cornell, Sir Laurence Olivier, John Gielgut and Judith Anderson and his profound religion has led him to model many Ri_ blical subjects, among them, a noted figure of Christ, which is in a Cathedral in Montgomery. He now divides his time between New York and his home in Ja. maica Island.

The 1958 spring pig crop in Mississippi has been estimated at 480,000, three per cent more than the ten-year average of 477,000 head for the 1947 to 1956 period.. .The number of pigs per litter this year aver, aged 6.2, last year’s average was 6.1.
NEW RECREATION AREAS
Plans have been made to establish twelve new recreation areas in the national forests of Mississippi. Picnic facilities will be availaible at each of the twelve new recreation areas determined from public opinion surveys. Mississippi has five national forests which are open to everyone who wants to visit or travel through them.. In 1957, recreational visits
to forests in this state reached a record peak of 866,000 persons. This expansion program gives our state added drawing power as a recreational paradise for visitors and home folks.
