(oast Cities ftND “JovTns. ^1" H1: main line of the L. & N. R. It.—bv which the Coast n^feached —covers nearly ten degrees of latitude. The transit from Cincin- nati to New Orleans presents to the tourist and traveller a ' succession of varied, and charming scenery. Unappreciative and stolid . must that person be whose attention is not arrested, whose inner I consciousness is not stirred, whose breast is not filled with satis- faction in observing the natural beauty of an ever-changing landscape such as is presented from the Ohio river to the Gulf of Mexico. It embraces nearl\r every feature of beauty and grandeur that nature discovers to her votaries in the temperate zone—of shady woodlands, and grassy meadows; receding hills and undulating plains, foothills and knobs and towering mountains, quiet lakes, and silver streams here winding placidly- along^ sequestered valleys, ihere rushing down from precipitous heights upon obstructing rocks which dash the water into showers of liquid gems; and again winding among the hills and hollows of the outlyers of a mountain range, or through stretches of magnificent forests of towering pine, or mazes of live oaks, magnolias, and scores of various evergreen and deciduous trees. Nor can the beholder fail to observe the wide range of products, or the gradual transition from one kind to another as degree after degree of latitude is spanned—a suggestive and also an impressive lesson of the wonderful resources of this favored land. On the line of the L. & N. is that wonderful natural phenomenon the Mammoth Cave, and the beautiful city of Nashville—the Athens of the South. There also, and farther southward on this line are points of thrilling interest in the later history of the country. The waters of the Gulf of Mexico on this route, are first touched at Mobile where a superb view of Mobile bay is obtained, and of the shipping in t’hQ harbor.
