Robert W., Douglas (died young), Irene G. (married a Graham), Hattie (died young), Cordelia (died young), Merits (married first to Ray James, then to John Riles), Molly (married first to an Amacker, then to a Riles), Maude (married Harvey Lowe), and Layton Stanford. Herbert Stanford also told us that his father was raised by his older cousin, Nathan Land Baxter. Mrs. H.G. “Molly” Howard of Hattiesburg told us that “Tack” Stanford married her older sister, Margaret “Maggie” Murphy.
XI.	Joseph Stanford - bom on August 2, 1820, and died on March 21, 1826. This
was the last child to be bom to John and Delila Stanford.
Many of John and Delila Stanford’s descendants are still living in the counties of southern Mississippi, especially in the Hancock, Pearl River, Harrison, Marion, and Lamar County areas. With this information, anybody related to this family should not have too much trouble tying themselves into what we have compiled. We have some additional information such as dates, stories, etc. about some members of this family if they should be needed.
This paper was originally written in July of 1973 when resources were hard to find. Because of this, we concentrated on interviewing older descendants of John Stanford. Today, with the internet, we have access to sources we only dreamed of in 1971. We used much of what we found on Ancestory.com, Familysearch.org, etc. as a “guide,” then followed up with our own research and conclusions as found in this updated paper.
You may have noticed that we have not given complete citations for every piece of information, especially census records. The reason simply being, it would have taken much longer to complete this history. There is enough information here that any “rookie” genealogist can find the specific source if they make even a half-hearted effort.
If anyone thinks this report is “perfect” they will be disappointed. This type of research is much too complex. Some of the above information was supplied by close family members and was often done from “memory.” Because of this there are possibly some mistakes, especially with those bom around 1900 and earlier. This is not to mention possible typing errors and mistakes we found in some of the many sources used. Can someone do better than what we have presented - of course, and we welcome anyone who is willing to help. Rest assured, 99 % of the information in this paper is accurate!
In our forty years of researching this family, we have collected many documents to support the information in this paper. Whenever possible we used original sources such as Bible records, census records, church records, etc.
