i IOOR STREET, BAX ST. LOUIS and CLERMONT HARBOR I > A yankee lady came to the Hancock County Historical Society, enthusiastic about being on the Gulf Coast but wanting her street renamed. Her street was "100-R Street". The name of the street is "Ioor" Street in Clermont Harbor, Miss. The street was named for one of the developers, John B. Ioor, long time tax assessor-collector of Hancock County. Ioor Street in Clermont Harbor, Miss., is 2 blocks long, black-topped, beginning at the Beach and extending to the intersection of Third Street (on the right) and Clermont Blvd (on the left). The street then takes the name of Clermont Boulevard and runs to St. Anne’s Street. Ioor Street in Bay St. Louis, Miss., is best known by the sign on Highway 90»5 it is the street west of of Keller. On the North,side ;of the Highway it is a one block, black topped street that runs into Washington Avenue. On the left side (south) of Highway 90, it is a 9 block, uncut, undedicated, allotted street which at some future time may be cleared and developed. ***** John B. Ioor, bom in Wilkinson County, ? 1845> came to BSL after serving in the Civil War (member of Camp Featherstone of Hancock County). He lived on Hancock Street with 2 sisters: Miss Ella Ioorfand Miss Maria Ioor and a brother, Harry Ioor. He was appointed Justice of peace for the 5th district by the then governor and then was elected for a term. Elected to the office of Tax assessor-collector in 1888, h was "a candidate for assessor every 2 years since 1888, He never made a canvass nor solicited a vote, telling friends and the public that if people wanted his service to continue, they were the best judges and it was left to their consideration to do so'.' As tax-assessor and collector he was particularly painstaking and always successful in the discharge of his duties. No man knew better the location of property, values, etc than he. He was a strong champion of a full assessment and small tax levy; for, he said, the present method of a low assessment cheapened property and the high rate of taxation kept outsiders and investors away - a contention in which he was eminently correc- One of his large and successful undertakings was the building of a new town, Clermont City in which work he was associated with F. C. Bordage: Sr., and which enterprise helped to build up that part of the country. His death coccurred on the eve of this big development, July 1, 1908. ' Miss Ella Ioor was postmistress August 1885-May 1894, She succeeded Mrs. Ave] and conducted the post office from her residence, corner Beach and Bookter.
