Before going on, one may ask what connection we can make of our Abijah Crosby to "this" John Crosby. While we have no direct proof, there is more than enough circumstantial evidence. First, we have our Abijah Crosby in the 1820 Census of Berne, NY where he is living next to his mother, Jerusha Crosby. Then there is Abijah Crosby's 1804 baptismal record that names his mother. Also there is only one "Abijah Crosby" living in that area at that time. There is nothing else even close. There are other pieces of evidence pointing to this connection, and we are more than satisfied with our conclusion. Additionally, there is not one thing in our research that would make us think anything different.
At this point, we must confess that we have done little research on Crosby lines going past our John Crosby. These lines have been researched for years by numerous people. What we have found seems well done, and we will now highlight some of this research. Anyone wishing to take these Crosby lines further out can find all they need on various sites on the internet.
Our John Crosby (son of Joshua Crosby and Lydia Hopkins) was born in 1758 in Frederickstown, Dutchess Co., NY. Frederickstown was also called Fredericks, Precinct, East Phillippi, and currently the hamlet of Patterson near the city of Southeast, NY. In 1812, that part of Dutchess Co. became Putnam Co., NY. We know that his parents moved from Harwich, Massachusetts because Joshua Crosby first shows up in the 1747 tax list of Dutchess Co. His wife, Lydia Hopkins, had her church affiliation transferred from The First Parish Church of Harwich to Dutchess County New York Church on September 3, 1749. With this, we can assume our John Crosby was born in what was then Dutchess Co., NY and later moved into Albany Co., NY where he died. His place of death was at West Mountain, Town of Berne, Albany Co., NY. He began his military service around 1776 at Dutchess,
NY, and he was living at Brant Hollow Rd., Huntersland, Town of Berne, NY at the time. John Crosby had a homestead on Grid 401, Lot 401, in Berne, Albany Co., NY in 1795. This property is near the graveyard where he is buried. This cemetery is part of the Baptist Church on Peasley Hill Road in Berne, NY.
John Crosby married Jerusha Foster (daughter of Nathaniel Foster and Phebe Wing). She was born in 1756 and died October 31, 1820 according to her headstone that is next to her husband. She joined the Congregational Church in Rensselaerville, NY on May 22, 1797. We have a copy of this original record.
This date, May 22nd' has an asterisk by her name which means she had "died", but not necessarily on that date.	She could not have died	on that	date because	she
later had her children baptized in that same church on	June 27,	1804. They
probably married in or around	Berne, NY around 1789 or	earlier	based on the	ages
of their oldest children. If	she was born in 1756 and	married	in 1789, she	would
have been age 33 when she married. If she married before 1789 at age 33, she could easily have had older children before the June 27, 1804. We will let that possibility to other researchers.
