Community Heritage Preservation and Mississippi Landmark Grant Programs June 7, 2002
During its 2002 session, the Mississippi Legislature enacted House Bill No. 1837, which authorizes die issuance of general obligation bonds to continue the Community Heritage Preservation Grant Program. A total of $5,335,000 is available for Round II of the Community Heritage Preservation Grant Program. The legislation also provides additional funding for the Mississippi Landmark Grant Program established by House Bill No. 1082, haws of Mississippi, 1999. As a result of die Legislature’s action, $2,000,000 is now available for the Mississippi Landmark Grant Program.
lhe Community Heritage Preservation Grants may be used to pay the cost of preservation, restoration, development, and interpretation of historic courthouses and school buildings. In Certified Ix>cal Government communities (communities that have established historic preservation commissions and programs that have been certified by the National Park Service), grant funds may also be used for projects involving historic buildings odier dian courthouses or schools.
The Mississippi Landmark Grants may be used to pay the cost of acquisition, preservation, restoration, operation, administration, and support of Mississippi Landmark properties.
A building must be designated a Mississippi Landmark prior to application to be eligible for grant assistance from either program. Exceptions may be made for acquisition of properties.
All grant awards will be paid to die grantee on a reimbursable basis upon the successful completion of the project. Applicants receiving grant awards should be prepared to cover all project costs prior to receiving reimbursement.
Enclosed are summaries of both grant programs. While some projects may meet the eligibility requirements for both grants, we encourage applicants to apply for the grant best suited for their particular project. Making application for both grants for the same project is strongly discouraged. Past applicants for Community Heritage Preservation Grant Program grant assistance may reapply.
If you would like to receive a copy of an application and criteria when they are available in late July, please complete the enclosed form, indicating which grant you are interested in, and return it to our office. Information about die program will also be posted on our website at www.mdah state.ms .us.
I encourage you to begin planning now if you w'ould like to submit an application for either grant program.
