DE LISLE IS NAMED
Before receiving the name of DeLisle, this spot was called "La Riviere des Loups."
Then came the English name of Wolf Town, which in 1884, yielded to the present name of DeLisle. Its post office was created on January 31, 1884, with George W.
Champlin as its first postmaster. It is now known positively by word of mouth that DeLisle was named after Bayou de Lisle, which received its name from Comte de

Isle was sent to explore the bay and gave his name to the first bayou he entered. Finding others streams, he called the largest one Riviere des Loups, then Bayou Acadien and finally Bayou Portage. This is approved by all who have studied the matter carefully and has the approval of Rowland & Co., of the archives of Mississippi at Jackson.
