First - The Camerons were Scots-Irish. Second - Three brothers came to Mississippi from South Carolina - two settled in central Mississippi, and one (Jesse) settled in Marion County. Third - One Cameron brother settled in Meridian, Mississippi. This information came from three elderly Cameron descendants named later in this paper. They were from different Cameron lines and had good memories. While there is probably some truth in these stories, they should be taken with a grain of salt. We now know that Levander Cameron and family left South Carolina sometime after 1820. We also know that Jesse Cameron first paid property taxes in Marion County, Mississippi, in 1828, indicating he purchased his land in 1827. Additionally, we know that Jesse’s first child, Premilla Cameron, was bom on October 6, 1826, as found in the Mathias Green family Bible. In the 1850 census of Hancock County, Mississippi, Premilla is living with her husband and children. This census says she was bom in Mississippi. See our research on the Mathias (Lundgren) Green Family for more. We feel Jesse Cameron mamed his wife, Lavina Stanford, in Marion County, Mississippi, probably in 1825 based on the age of their first child who was bom in 1826. Lavina Stanford was bom on July 16, 1810, in the state of Georgia. Lavina and her parents, John and Delila Stanford immigrated to Marion County, Mississippi, in or around the year 1815, well before the arrival of Jesse Cameron, thus they had to marry in Marion County, Mississippi, or some nearby county. As of this date, we have been unable to locate their marriage record. For more, see our research paper titled John Stanford Family of South Mississippi. With the above, we can estimate that Jesse Cameron arrived in Marion County, Mississippi, in or around the year 1824 and first settled on the Pearl River as determined from early Marion County property tax records. Based on early census records, Levander and Hester Cameron started having children around 1795 through around 1824. We will now try to identify what we feel are the known children of Levander and Hester Cameron: I. Jesse Cameron - bom in or around 1800 in South Carolina as already discussed. His descendants will be covered later in this paper. II. Melissa “Lecy” Cameron - bom around 1805 if age 25 when she married. She married William Roach on January 20, 1830, in Marion County, Mississippi. Her husband appears in the 1840 Marion County census living alone, indicating she was probably dead by that year. William was bom between 1781 and 1790. We suspect Lecy was a nick-name for Melissa because her brother, William, sister, Eliza, and sister, Winny, each had a child named Melissa, probably after their deceased sister. We have found no other record on her. III. Hugh Cameron - bom around 1807 based on the age of his wife, Elizabeth “Betsey” Cameron, who was bom in 1810 in South Carolina, as listed in the 1850 Perry County, Mississippi, census. Betsey has no husband listed in the 1850 and 3
