signed previously will not have to re-sign. We expect this law to be extended. New signees can apply only from 1 January through 1 April. We have some 8,500 Homestead Exempted properties at present. This office is charged with the responsibility of maintaining the County computer system. We have a VS100 Wang system. Each day our programs are backed up with a weekly backup of the entire system. We are presently trying to secure UPS System that will protect the system from power outages, etc. The system operator handles the minor repairs that are needed to keep the system working on a daily basis. This office prints our own land rolls, our tax receipts and all billings. This helps us maintain a sense of self sufficiency. TAX COLLECTION OFFICES: We have identified the property, placed a value on each parcel and now we are ready to collect taxes. Taxes are due during the month of January, and become delinquent after the first of February. Delinquent property is sold on the last Monday of August. The property owner has two and a half years to redeem same after the sale. Our recent tax sale for County, City and School taxes amounted to $475,000 worth of taxes. The County could then sell or dispose of the property as they saw fit. Presnetly, when the property is sold by the State the State gives the County only two year back taxes. The Tax Collection office collects all Real, Personal property, Public Utilities, Mobile Home and Motor Vehicle Taxes. We collect over eleven million dollars annually. All monies collected are turned over to the County by the twentieth of each month. We collect Ad Valorem taxes for the City of Bay St. Louis with one receipt and one billing saving a great deal of money. All Motor vehicles sold are reported to Jackson immediately and become registered with the State within one day. Thus stolen vehicles are easily identified. We sell over 25,000 motor vehicle tags annually. Each year the County Board of Supervisors and other taxing authorities decide the monies needed to run the vairous Government agencies. They come up with a budget expressed in mills. The assessed valuation of your property times the mill rates give the amount of taxes due. And also, the amount for new car tags.
