With war imminent Ted (Buzzy), Eddie and Gerald volunteered for service on the same day. Buzzy and Eddie enlisted in the Army, Gerald in the Navy. This is the first extant letter from Buzzy, from basic training at San Benito, Texas, March 29, 1917. War was declared in April.
The stationery and the writing room were supplied by the Y.M.C.A. Letterhead is from headquarters in New York. The penmanship is elegant, indicating manual skill and artistic talent.
Description of drilling, etc. is quite positive, showing his aptitude and cheerful acceptance of military life. He has high praise for his drill sergeant.
