Spanish American War service - lied about his age and joined the 1st Louisiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment and served in Company "L" and "M". They traveled from NO to Miami for embarkation to Cuba. [I always believed that he was a member of the Rough Riders but, have since found out that the 1st LA was the infantry unit attached to Roosevelt's cavalry; Edith, he was a rifleman not the drummer. (I have recently requested his service records)] After Cuba, they sailed to Jacksonville and mustered out from there. He served many years as the United Spanish War Veterans Association, Senior Vice Commander for Mississippi and as the National Adjutant. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Serpent a "secret" service group.
NOPD - he joined the force in 1901 (I think) and worked his way up from patrolman to Captain. He command the 5th District which at that time, included the French Quarter, dock area of the riverfront, and the Garden District. He retired in 1922, the youngest officer ever to retire from the force. For a long time, he was the oldest living retiree of the NOPD.
BSL - in 1926 he was elected as the Alderman for the 1 st Ward. He was elected and served as Mayor from 1927 through 1932. During his administration, the wooden Bay bridge was built and they also bought the first motorized fire engine. This truck is the one that was housed at the fire station behind the high school. We used to play on it as kids!
He was also a VP and Director of Operations for Peoples Federal Savings and Loan (the Homestead). He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years.
