The W. A. Whitfield named here is William Alexander Whitfield. He was bom at Vilanow,
Wayne County, North Carolina, on May 20, 1817. He was the 27th child of his father, William Whitfield III (bom June 1, 1743 in N. C. at Rockford, the home of his father, and he is buried near the Neuse River at his homestead in Wayne County, N.C.). W.A. was a posthumous child, and was bom 53 years after his oldest half-brother. W.A. was the last child of his father?s fourth wife, Sarah Bryan Hatch. Her parents were Lemuel Hatch and Sarah Bryan. Family tradition says W. A. graduated from the U. of N.C. at Chapel Hill. W.A. came to Mississippi in about 1845 to work on his brother?s plantation, and in about 1849 he purchased the Shell Bank Plantation, and re-named it ?Shelly.? William Alexander was buried in the American (or Protestant) Cemetery in Monterey, Mexico. He had gone to Mexico in 1891 to establish a large coffee plantation, but he was ruined economically by a hard freeze that destroyed his trees.
The C. H. listed is his wife, Charity Helen Jones (they were married Dec. 1, 1841, and she died in 1877). She was the daughter of Seth Jones and Sally Alston. She also was from North Carolina. She is buried in the cemetery at the plantation.
The ?I? is Irene Whitfield (b. Feb. 1, 1850, d. Oct. 13, 1875, and buried in the family cemetery at Shelly). She later married Dr. Christopher Columbus Post, from New Orleans. Family legend has it that C.C. had an affair with a ?Mrs. Saucier? somewhere along the Gulf Coast, so Irene returned to live with her parents, bringing her two sons, William Whitfield Post (who homesteaded in SW Louisiana, and had several children) and Vertmiriam Post (who died in a boiler explosion in Mexico in 1890 without issue).
The ?I. St.L? person is Iolause St. Louis (named for the bay???). He died in Texas and had no issue.
The ?B. K.? is my grandfather, Blanchard Kearney (b. Sept 6, 1856, d. Nov. 15, 1950 in Lafayette, Louisiana. He married Yvonne Mouton, and had 10 children).
The ?A? on the next page is Alston Jones (b. March 11, 1860, d. in Mexico, m. 1st Emma Jones-one son Elliott?and 2nd Ann E. Rickey?two sons, Arthur and Alston?and these three children were orphaned in Mexico).

The oldest child, Rosabelle, bom in 1842 and died at shelly in 1850. She is buried in the family cemetery on the property.
Vohilion Carolinus (b. May 13, 1862, d. 1948, m. Maggie Winton?1 child).
Overtus Montague (b. Jan. 1, 1865, d. Jan 6, 1940, m. Henrietta Airey?5 children).
Vertalee (b. Aug. 10, 1867, d.__________, m. Turner Bates?1 adopted daughter). She spent most of
her life in Maxie, MS., and is buried there.
