GULFPORT ? The city has given temporary berth of its Union Station Depot to a private genealogical library.
In return, the library owner will likely donate her books and artifacts
nealogical Library for years in various locations, at her own expense, and allowed the public to use it to trace family heritage and do history research.
The library was located in Bay St. Louis until recently, but now all the
library items are in storage until a new home is found.
The City Council on Tuesday voted to allow the library to move into the depot on 14th Street until councilmen find a permanent site.
"It's one of the premiere genealogical libraries in the country, ? said city spokesman Steve Dickerson.
Terms of Anderson?s deal with the
city are still being negotiated, but Anderson would like to donate the library to Gulfport, said city attorney Harry Hewes.
"She could either donate it or sell it, and she has potential buyers,? Hewes said.
"But she would like to donate it, if the city will maintain it."
Mayor Ken Combs advised counril-
men against putting the library in the depot building. The city?s long-range plan for the depot is to turn it into a transportation hub and retail shopping center.
?I think we have other building space, such as the old Metropolitan Bank building, that would be more appropriate," Combs said. ?Or, the Highway Patrol is talking about mov-
ing out of the building in We Gulfport."
But Councilman Kim Savant s; the temporary move will not hurt t depot?s prospects.
?We're not talking about it bei there until the end of time,? Sav< said. "As far as 1 know, any gro wanting free space, that's whe we're putting them right now.?
