Growth once again necessitated a change, and in 1971 the Main Office moved into a beautiful, modern, two story building, designed by Architect Fred Wagner. In his "Open House" message for the new office building, Mr. Wagner mentioned several outstanding features of the new edifice, the most important one being that the building can expand to more than double its present size. Also worthy of note is the fact that all inflexible parts of the building are situated in such a manner that they occupy the center of the south side of the building, and when expansion becomes necessary, these facilities (stairways, air-conditioning equipment, rest rooms and elevator) will be centrally located. The attractive layout of the entire office on both floors is completely flexible, so that the size of offices can be changed with relative ease, and re-arranged as necessary. This same flexibility is inherent in the Herman Miller "Action Office" Furniture, with its modular privacy panels which house coordinated desk and storage units.
In the spacious lobby are displayed a number of large appliances, which are available to consumers on a cash basis. Also available to consumers are several models of heaters, and a new addition of attic fans. The consumer is responsible for the installation and service of appliances bought, but Coast Electric does keep service pieces on hand, such as heater parts, percollator parts, cords, thermostats, and water heater elements.
The modern office is manned by an accounting and payroll department, purchasing department, energy management department, General Manager Henry Thomas, Executive Secretary Edris Stechmann, Administrative Assistant Pat (Mauffray) Harvill, general office, and operations department.
In addition to the headquarters' building in Bay St. Louis, branch offices are located in Picayune, Poplarville, Gulfport, and East Harrison County.
Coast Electric at one time did all interviewing of job applicants, but as the number of applicants increased, this practice was discontinued. Now applicants are accepted through the Mississippi State Employment Service, which refers the best qualified candidates to the Administrative Assistant. Then a series of procedures, including a check on personal and previous employment records, and a physical examination, must be completed before the applicant can be employed. Employees are hired from the three county area of Pearl River, Harrison, and Hancock Counties, served by Coast Electric, to work in the Headquarters' building and in the Picayune, Poplarville, Gulfport, and East Harrison County Offices.
