Merritt Brunies (trombone) is the Grandfather of Dixieland Jazz on the Gulf Coast. He’s been playing its toe tapping tunes since 1925. You’ll find him every Saturday night at Baricev’s on Biloxi’s Central Beach with his Dixieland Band, which recently made platters of several famous jazz tunes for the new American Music Record Company of New Orleans. • —Photo by Audrey Murphy Hancock County (Continued from Page 5) Recently history sort of repeated itself. Bay St. Louis was partially by-passed by the U.S. 90 traffic which booms across the new bridge. But this scenic and serene community knows that most Gulf Coast guests will either drive off or drive back to visit her historic and picturesque religious and scholastic institutions, to visit those beautiful gardens and the Lazy-Y Riding stables on her outskirts, to taste her delicious pralines (for Bay St. Louis with ten family owned factories concentrated on her U.S. 90 approach is known as the Praline Capital of the World), and to enjoy the sincere hospitality and beautiful scenery of this section of Coast that first extended the hand of welcome to strangers. This is where America’s first and only Negro bishop prepared for the priesthood— Father Joseph Bowers, ordained at Bay St. Louis, Bishop of Accra, Africa, in 1953. In Bay St. Louis is located the famous century old St. Stanislaus Catholic Boys’ School whose grounds and facilities extend almost a mile in depth with its cross crowned domes facing the Gulf of Mexico. And nearby is the equally old St. Joseph Academy for Girls, which celebrated its centennial in 1955. In Bay St. Louis—at 121 South Beach Boulevard—is the drug store of L. A. deMontluzin and Son, the oldest pharmacy still owned and still operated by the same family on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is an interesting place to visit because its three generations have deliberately and proudly preserved its patina of history, even to the now almost forgotten three foot high French crystal apothecary jars that were once the fa-(Continued on Page 30) BELMAR COTTAGES On Highway 90 Overlooking the Gulf of Mexico . . . You'll thrill at your first close-up of the fierce predatory shark, weird devil fish, deadly barracuda and scores of other rare deep sea species in their natural habitat. • You will see attractive young ladies ride the giant sea turtles and skin divers romp with the porpoises. You can spend all the time you wish watching, photographing and studying the denizens of the deep through the many port holes in the living sea. • Feeding time is twice each morning and four times every afternoon and divers enter the oceanarium frequently to hand feed the occupants—so almost anytime you arrive is deep sea show time.
