1916 Repair and restoration of the “little house in the woods” of Fonthill, a part of the “Bestler tract” (see 1907). HCM replaced the roof with one made of concrete, and added a concrete-framed window in the west gable. HCM dated this stone house c. 1765-1775, and encouraged its use as a “museum” by the Doylestown Nature Club.
1916-1917 Sometime between May 1,1916 and May 1, 1917 (dates of Frank Swain’s annual report for the tile works), three tile-roofed towers were added as “improvements” to the new pottery building. Two were placed atop the Studio, or “new Indian House” wing; the larger at the northern end, where it abutted the rest of the structure and the smaller over the southern end. A third tower, lower than the others, was erected near the midpoint of the southerly wing of the tile works cloister.
1917	September^ William Mercer, Sr., HCM’s father died, leaving Aldie in the hands of Willie, Jr. (Mary Mercer’s will had provided that the house would pass to her children, after their father’s death. In 1909, when he moved to Linden, HCM had deeded over his share of the house to Willie, Jr., to his eventual regret — see 1928.)
