STATE OF MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES AND HISTORY P. O. BOX 571 JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI 39205 BOARD OF TRUSTEES WILLIAM F. WINTER. PRESIDENT JOHN K BETTERSWORTH ARCH DALRYMPLE III AUQUSt 21, 1981 HERMAN B DECELL FRANK E EVERETT JR MRS MITCHELL ROBINSON ESTUS SMITH EVERETTE TRULY SHERWOOD W WISE ELBERT R HILLIARD DIRECTOR Mrs. Margaret Gibbons, Historic Sites Chairman The Hancock County Historical Society Post Office Box 1340 Bay St. Louis, Mississippi 39520 Dear Mrs. Gibbons: The Board of Trustees of the Department of Archives and History has considered your request for an official state historical marker for Pearlington. Due to the large number of requests for markers, and due to the budget controls imposed on state agencies, the Board was unable to approve your request for a state-funded marker. The Board of Trustees did, however, approve the marker for private funding in case the Hancock County Historical Society would like to sponsor this as a special project. The current cost of a marker is $550, plus shipping charges. The texts for privately funded markers, using the official state historical marker format, must be edited and approved by the Department of Archives and History. The Department is also responsible for placing the order with the manufacturer. If the Hancock County Historical Society is interested in sponsoring the marker, please advise Norman Chronister, Historian, Division of Historic Preservation. We appreciate your interest in preserving and interpreting the history of our state and the support that you have given the Department and its programs. Sincerely, Elbert R.
