NOTE:	Prudence (Smith) Ladner was known by many far and near
as Aunt Prudie Ladner, Known as the Doctor of the Backwood's, who delivered, cured, nursed, and inspired hundreds of people in South Mississippi during her 65 years service, as midwife and Doctor.
She was more than a midwife, was Aunt Prudie:	She	was a
doctor, as well versed in thing's medical as many a Qualified Physician. She placed her greatest trust in herbs and roots.
She used the tar salve to bring a boil to a head. She brewed a tea of "four corners of the earth" a grass for a Kidney flush.
For Malaria, she brewed a tea from the black snake root. Tonsittitis called for a gargle made of persimmon bark, red oak bark and salt. Dysentery disappeared after using a tea made from blackberry root and red oak bark.
Aunt Prudie regarded herself as a mere instrument of the Lord, and was always ready to teach her skills to anyone who sought to learn. She coveted no secrets. She nursed back to health thousands of people in a territory which included parts of Five counties;
Stone, Pearl River, Lamar, Forrest, and Marion.
During her life Aunt Prudie delivered 2886 babies, and never lost a single one. A record any Doctor in our society would be proud to achieve.
Her husband, Paris Ladner, was the first supervisor in Pearl River Co., MS.. He also set up a school in his home. Among his pupils were Mr. Ran Batson, and Theodore Bilbo, who later became Governor and Senator of our Great State of Mississippi.
Paris died in 1916 and Aunt Prudie took over the entire management of her bulging household. She was always eager to do battle with pain and fear until she was 80 years young. She no longer could ride astride a horse.
Aunt Prudie died Aug. 7, 1944 and left a glowing memory in the hearts of the thousands she aided in her six and one half decades of doctoring.
