The name of the village of Bay St. Louis was changed at one time to honor Thomas Shield ~ and called Shieldsboro. For many years both names were usedg and it proved most confusing. In January of 1858 the Mayor and Board of Aldermen attempted to clarify by incorporating the town under the name of Shieldsboro. This move did not meet general approval. On March 2, 1875 the name of Bay St. Louis was restored and the town incorporated.
