leaders helped Gulf Publishing Co., Inc. celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Bay Bureau Friday at a reception held in The Homestead on Main Street, Bay St. Louis.
Special guest was Bessie Scafide Presley, who built up the Hancock County delivery route she took over from her little brother in 1935 from 35 to 375 subscribers. She served as supervisor of the mail room in the main offices on DeBuys Road in Gulfport between 1942 and 1954, when she left to open her own business in Bay St. Louis.
Delivering The Daily Herald during the Great Depression years sometimes meant bartering. ?There was one old man who wanted a paper but he had no money. So I swapped him one for a small pig," Mrs. Presley said. One man bartered two ducks, and storekeepers sometimes paid for their paper with clothing, she said. Dedicated readers indeed.
Mrs. Presley's cutting of the Bay Bureau?s birthday cake ended a brief ceremony in which Gulf Publishing's managers, editors, writers, advertising and circulation staff of The Daily Herald and The Sun were introduced to the local folk by

President and General Manager Roland Weeks announced the company's birthday gift to the community ? a literature display rack for the Hancock County Library System. Library director Prima Wusnack and Research Librarian Sherry Schwabacher said the supplier promised quick delivery.
Four framed montages of articles spanning the 10 years of Gulf Publishing Company?s news coverage in the county were on display during the reception. The display will hang permanently in the Bay Bureau at 151 Main Street.
The anniversary celebration continues this week through Friday, with open house at the Bureau. The public is cordially invited to meet the staff, view the display, share refreshments, and take home a souvenir of the occasion.
Gulf Publishing Co., Inc. has been a part of the growth of Hancock County during the last 10 years, when its population rose from 17,000 to more than 24,000 today. We share the county?s pride in that growth.
