Joseph Morin and his wife, Marie "Louise" Ladner dit Christian Place and date of their birth and death
There has been much confusion over the years as to when and where Joseph Morin and his wife, Louise were born and died. I have studied numerous records and I have come to the following conclusions. We know Joseph Morin was a "native of Canada," son of "Denis Morin and Maria Madalena Bouley" as found on the Baptism record of their 4 children dated April 22,1801, and housed at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Mobile, Alabama (Baptism Bk. #2, page 77-a). His wife was named as "Louisa Ladner, native of this Parish, daughter of "Nicolas Ladner and Mariana Paquet." Children named that year were: Francisco, age 12; Louisa, age 10; Helena, age 8; and Juan, age 6 years. The "Louisa" was Louise Desiree "Pouponne" Morin that married Gilbert "Julbare" Ladner, making her born in 1791 on Cat Island, several miles off the Harrison County, Mississippi Coast.
Joseph Morin was born in the year of 1747 as found on the 1786 Spanish Census of the "Mobile District," age 39 that year and living next to "Nic Christian" (his father-in-law, Nicolas Ladner dit Christian). Keep in mind that the Mobile District at that time covered the entire Mississippi coast, to include Cat Island.
Looking again at the above Baptism record of Joseph's 4 children in 1801, we notice that the baptism took place on CAT ISLAND, at the home of Louise's parents, "Nicolas Ladner and Mariana Paquet." We know that Nicolas Ladner occupied Cat Island from 1746, and was apparently still living there in 1801. It was on Cat Island that all of his children were born between 1759 and 1783. With this, one can logically conclude that Joseph Morin, his wife, and children were also living on CAT ISLAND at that time, and his children were most likely born there as well.
The next record we have on Joseph Morin is his marriage on June 2,1778 where he married "Mademoiselle Louisa Christian, legitimate and natural daughter of Nicolas Christian and Dame Marie Anne Magdelaine." The record names his parents as "deceased Denis Morin and the deceased Dame Magdeleine Boule." This record is found at the Cathedral in Mobile, Alabama (Marr. Bk. #1, page 51).
Joseph Morin and his wife's place of death and approximate death date can be determined thru 2 documents. On the application for a marriage dispensation due to blood relationship, dated July 29, 1802, Jean Baptiste Ladner (son of Jacque Ladner dit Mathurin and Marie Jeanne Carco) and Marie Josephe Morin (daughter of Joseph Morin and Marie "Louise" Ladner dit Christian), state they are cousins, "natives of this Provence," and the parents of both are "living." The original record is found at the University of Notre Dame and was contributed by Brother Jerome Lepre of New Orleans, LA. This record was published in February 1982, Vol. 18, No. 1, Mississippi Coast Historical and Genealogical Society Publication, and is also found in the Ladner Odyssey, page 515+.
The final record on Joseph Morin and his wife is found in the marriage record of their son, Pierre Morin to Judith Nicaise on November 25,1805. In this record the Spanish priest mentioned that Pierre Morin was "the legitimate child of the DECEASED Jose and Luisa Ladner." This record is found at the Cathedral in Mobile, AL (Marr. Bk. 1, page 102b, entry #48).
