blanchards, as they loved him. Uncle Van in earlier years had been the sheriff and clerk of court in Hancock County. I understand Nanan worked for him at the sheriff's department before they were married. They no doubt struggled raising Uncle Van's children, helping Blanchards. I understand they had tried some business ventures. (I learned of these while working on this project.) Emerald and Arthur Baudier told me they owned a hotel named "The Victory" in Bay St. Louis. Horace, Jr. wrote they owned a dairy. The Whitfields endured many tragedies. Horace and his son Jack drowned. Later, Horace, Jr. had both legs amputated in a train accident. J.Y. died a young man from pneumonia. I did not know the Whitfields well. I knew Luva and vaguely recall Rufus. I knew the grandsons, Horace, Jr. and Donald Whitfield. I had not seen or heard of them for many years, not since Uncle Van's funeral in 1962. I'm lucky to have become reacquainted with Horace and his wife Drucille while working on this family tree. How grateful I am that these two loving and sensitive people where present in my life at such a critical time. r God Bless Them! Andre Trawick, Jr. February 25,1993 3
