Gulf Coast Wooden Boat ivendezvous October 6-9, 1994
The Gulf Coast Wooden Boat Association in partnership with the Hancock County Historical Society is planning the 1994 Gulf Coast Wooden Boat Rendezvous. A Magical site in Bay St. Louis has been set, and an organizational meeting is being planned for early May of 1994.
Bay St. Louis has a rich history of Wooden Boat Building dating back to the late 1700's. Many wooden vessels were built in Hancock County, and serviced the needs of the fishing industry and provided for the transportation of goods along the Mississippi River, the Mississippi Sound and Ports along the Gulf of Mexico. Recent discoveries of w ooden vessels dating back to the early 1800's have helped to generate interest in the History of Boat Building along this section of the Mississippi Coast.
The planned rendezvous will help to raise funds for an addition to the Hancock County Historical Societies existing building. This badly needed addition, will provide Mr. Charles Gray (President of the Hancock County Historical Society) and his staff of volunteers, the room to store, and work on the many historical documents they have collected.
In addition a book documenting the Boat Building History of Hancock County from the years of 1795 to 1895, is scheduled to be published and released for the Rendezvous scheduled in October.
Many boat owners and volunteers are needed to make a Rendezvous happen. This years rendezvous will be held one month before another Gulf Coast Tradition, The Race of the White Wings, where Bay St. Louis will be represented by two wooden sailboats (Maple Leaf III and the R. A. Merideth). We felt that boat owners put so much work into their boats to get them ready for these activities, that it made sense to schedule them close together.
This years rendezvous is planned for the enjoyment of the boat owners.
Many dock side activities are being planned and we w ant the Wooden Boat Owners to have as much fun as possible. That's why this years rendezvous is planned to take place at such a Magical Location!
