i Space Center e programs, Stennis evolved into a multi-agency facility, hie, environmental, and national defense programs. The National Mapping Division Applications Assistance Facility gives aid in the use of remote sensing data to address environmental problems. The National Cartographic Information Center provides the public with current information on basic topographic maps and aerial photos of the U.S. and satellite images covering most areas of the Earth. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Chemistry Laboratory tests for the presence of pesticides and other pollutants in human and environmental samples. OTHER AGENCIES /ORGANIZATIONS NASA’s Technology Utilization Program at Stennis offers numerous services to state and local government and to industry users requesting assistance. The Mississippi Technology Transfer Office is located on site. Additionally, the Institute for Naval Oceanography and the Institute for Technology Development’s Space Remote Sensing Center have offices at Stennis. University elements at the Stennis Center include the Mississippi State University Research Center, the University of Southern Mississippi Center for Marine Science, and the USM Division of Lifelong Learning. VISITOR AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS The Stennis Visitors Center is a major attraction, hosting guests from all over the world. Visitors are given a guided tour of the Space Shuttle test complex where they can view a main engine firing when tests are conducted during hours of operation. Inside the Visitors Center are many informative displays, including a moon rock and the Apollo 4 command module. The Hall of Achievements features exhibits, large-scale models, and videotapes depicting the missions of NASA and Stennis resident agencies. The Visitors Center is open seven days a week, except on Christmas, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no admission fee. Groups are encouraged to make reservations by calling (601) 688-2370. Of particular interest to educators is the Stennis Teacher Resource Center, located in the Visitors Center. The TRC provides materials such as videotapes, slides, and lesson plans. Tapes and slides are copied free of charge if teachers supply blank tapes or film. The resource center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For information call (601) 688-3338.
