Holiday food drive
A holiday food drive sponsored by the Holiday Inn, Coconuts, and Rick Bounds Auto Sales, yielded a record number of donations for the Hancock County Food Pantry. Local residents dipped deep and donated 62 boxes of food which completely filled a 3/4 ton pickup truck donated by Bounds to transport the food. Volunteers dressed in Santa attire delivered the food on Saturday along with a $50 anonymous donation by a gentleman who was passing by as they were unloading the truck, said Colleen Abadie. Donations were collected in front of Sav a Center, from local businesses, and from the truck which was parked in front of the Holiday Inn, Ricky Favre said. “People were wonderful and were donating whole bags of groceries,” said Colleen Abadie. “One man emptied his whole basket of groceries and went back | in the store and shopped for himself.” “We don’t want to take any particular credit for the success,” said Favre. “Rick bounds and I thought of the idea ... we wanted to do something to help. But the real success of the drive should be credited to the people of Hancock County and their generosity. Even people who were not that well off themselves donated ... one family said they had to use the food pantry in the past and understood the need and wanted to make sure that there was plenty of food for other people, the response was wonderful.” Aileen Sauzer, director of the food pantry, said on Wednesday, that for once they were set both with food donations and cash donations.
