TV'00333 NEW 01__,ANIANS WELCOME SUMMER CLOSE UP PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENTS SEEK SHADY WOODS AND SEASHORES BUILD NEW HOMES AND BUSINESSES May - 18^8 SUMMER Entertainments Close Within a week how perceptibly has summer manifested itself I The most marked change is the cessation of theatrical and musica excitements and exhibitional agonies. On the 13„ttl_i..nst; the Amphitheater closed, and StCharles street setjt"led down_for its summer nap; that is, so far as amusements are concerned. The hand-organs of the little fancy shows, it is true, continue to groan and wail; but they are only a sort of chronic infirmity--a ringing in the ear, to ijhich the street has become so accustomed, that it can sleep in spite of it. Then, on the I'+th, the singing of the peerless Vestvali, awoke the last sweet echoes of the season, in that cherished center of music,.dancing and general gaiety, Odd Fellows' Hall. The May festival wound ud its balls, and Vestvali's concert concluded its musical re-unions. And on the 16th, closed that glorious old tempoe of music and sceh8c display as well as cdnter of fashion, the Orleans Theater. The sweet strains of Bourgeois, Colson, Delagrave, Junca, and the choristers, are hushed for the summer--some of them, perhaps, to our ears forever--and the street-scswont to glitter nightly with whole squares of carriage lanterns, can now boast no more nocturnal brilliancy than that of the paltr^ beqr-shop and confectionary lights, The close of the theaters and the cessation of public festivity, are the first great mark of summer.
