THE HOME OF LESLIE DAVIS, LILY DALE COTTAGE, 316 Oak Street. This charming cottage, circa 1913, was built for Mr. and Mrs. John Allen, owners of Lily Dale Nursery, and is located across the street from the former lily field. Easter lily bulbs were once exported from the nursery. The cottage has the original white oak flooring and French doors. This is a small two bedroom cottage with a rear porch and tropical landscape. Lily Dale was recognized as a historic property in 2000 by the Long Beach Historical Society. Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. 6. COLLIN WOOD MEMORIAL GARDEN, 563 Trautman Avenue. The garden is located at the home of Beatrice Collins. The garden was built in loving memory of Miss Collins' parents, who were long time residents of Long Beach, and was dedicated December 1, 2000. The garden, hand built by the owner, is located on the south and east sides of the home and is separated by a drainage brook with a Japanese bridge dividing tiny strips of land to the south which contain many unique forms of Japanese statuary. Passing through an antique iron gate from the Vieux Carre in New Orleans to the east into a French garden is a threetiered waterfall flanked by a bronze crane. Observe the serpentine brick patio with steps leading up to a terrace, designed and laid by Beatrice 1987-1991. An entertainment area makes up the bottom floor of the home and includes a solarium and galley. Of special interest is the counter top, a design using tiles collected over forty years of foreign and American travel. Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. /#:. HEADQUARTERS: GRASS LAWN, 720 East Beach Boulevard. Grass Lawn is listed in the National Register of Historic Homes and is five years older than Harrison County and sixty- two years older than Gulfport. It was built in 1836 by Dr. and Mrs. Hiram A. Roberts of Port Gibson as a summer home to get away from the "fever". The house is constructed of hand hewn pine and cypress timbers held together by wooden pegs. The 10-foot-wide galleries are supported by wooden balustrades with balusters of triangular design - Grass Lawn's trademark. These porches surround the house both upstairs and downstairs. The furnishings are of the period of the house. Join us for refreshments and a flower show entitled "Color My World in Flowers" featuring tablescapes created by Bayou View Garden Club members. These will feature shades and hues inspired by our colorful surroundings. Hostesses: Bayou View Garden Club and Gulf Gardeners Garden Club. Hours: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. 2. ST. PETER'S BY THE SEA EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1912 East Beach Blvd. The church was organized in 1899, and was admitted to the Diocese Of Mississippi in 1902 as a mission, and attained parish status in 1921. The church is celebrating its Centennial this year. Its present location is the third home it has occupied. The architectural firm of Barron and Toups designed the new church buildings and they refer to the style as "Gulf Coast Gothic". This unique design makes excellent use of natural light and features eight memorial stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of St. Peter. The church's round windows by designer Andrew Cary Young contain symbols of St. Peter. George P. Hopkins was the general contractor. Please note the 84 rank electronic organ and the unspoiled view of the Gulf that is encouraged by the landscaping. St. Peter's will host a special display of paintings by artist Frank Janca. Much like pre-mid-19th century painters, Janca works with pigments he mixes himself and applies to Belgian linen canvases. For more than 30 years, he has drawn upon his study of the Old Masters' classical tradition as well as his own sensitivity to nature, painting primarily landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Although Maryland-born, Janca grew up in Biloxi and, as a young man, moved to New York to study at the Art Students' League and the School of Visual Arts. His appreciation and use of light and shadow are suggestive of the works of Velasquez and other well-known Baroque painters. Pilgrimage guests may register to win one of Janca's paintings, valued at more than $1,800, to be given away on the Grande Finale Evening.
