Markel says he has doubled his business here—now produces 400 screens a day—finds his traffic and shipping problems minimized — and is centrally located in the growing and booming territory that covers Southern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. To Bay St. Louis in April, 1957, came a new company and the only one of its kind in the South, producing electronic control instrument panels for the chemical process industry. The customers of this Monitor Panel Company are oil refineries, naval stores plants, pulp mills, insecticide and other chemical plants. It is easy to see that in this Coastal area, to which are converging more and more chemical process plants, that the Bay St. Louis location was intelligently chosen. H. A. Thompson, Jr., and Reese Horton, both chemical engineers registered in both Louisiana and Mississippi, are the partner owners. Their employees are electricians and pipe fitters living in or near Bay St. Louis. These two new industries, as Hancock County business men realize, are the first of a new industrial trend toward this rich and bountiful county that straddles Highway 90, the transcontinental truck and car shortcut across the Deep South, and that forms the western anchor end of the fast growing Mississippi Gulf Coast, picked by the economists as one of the brightest spots on the nation’s economic map. ELECTRIC SERVICE AVAILABLE TO EVERY RURAL RESIDENT Since d’Iberville discovered the broad sweep of beautiful Bay of St. Louis in 1699 this Gateway to the Gulf Coast has attracted visitors to its saltwater strip and its coastal communities. But since 1937—it has also been steadily attracting permanent residents to its rural sections. That was the year Coast Electric Power Association was created in Hancock and established its headquarters at Bay St. Louis—a cooperative electric power company owned by the users themselves—that has carried electricity into the most remote rural areas of Hancock County—permitting the rural residents anywhere in the county to operate electric farm and dairy equipment, to light their homes, to refrigerate and freeze their food, to enjoy the TV and to own the thousand and one electric servants that bring city conveniences to country living. When the Coast Electric, which serves the three counties of Hancock, Harrison and Pearl River, started stringing its power lines in 1937 it served only 25 members on 25 miles of wire. Today twenty years later, it serves 2,000 member users on 450 miles of power lines in Hancock County alone— of which more than 550 have been added in the last five years. Which is a good place to conclude this article—for these pertinent statistics on the new and steadily increasing users of electrical power in rural Hancock County neatly summarizes what we have been expounding and explaining—that more and more people who casually drive through this Western Gateway to the Coast to take a look find themselves picking a place to live. ★ DRIVE-IN RESTAURANT featuring Charcoal Burgers, Charcoal Broil Steaks, Barbecue Ribs, Pizza Pies, and Sandwiches.
