FOREWORD
Although the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe can trace its earliest Tunica settlement in Avoyelles Parish back from the early 1770's to the present, its history and culture remain something of a mystery to area residents.
Through this compilation of essays which have been authored by scholars from various humanities disciplines, through maps and photos, we hope to familiarize people with the earliest history and cultural heritage of the tribe, as well as give an overview of their goals for the future. Today's tribal members have - integrated into the community, and yet have maintained a distinct form of culture which has not become absorbed in the "melting pot."
It is important that people become aware of each culture that contributes to the overall make-up of our state and nation. We hope this booklet will be of help in that process.
