And if, perchance, the city air becomes too oppressive, there are shady retreats on all sides,-which may be reached in a few moments on the wings of steam.
The more fortunate class of the population, who can afford summer residences along the Lake and Gulf shores, are stocking and otherwise fitting them up	for	t haT~ transient '"'re	t ir emen t from city turmoil,
which is	one of	the	greatest luxuries	of life. The Hotels at the
watering	places	are	brightening up to	receive the crowds whose
absences	from the city are limited to	weeks and days; the summer
steam packets are chalking out programmes of excursionizing lusury; and the railroad companies are accommodating their time-tables to the requirements of pleasure-seekers.
The usual winter crowd are briskly on the wing, with their bills pointing northward; but eh oarge class of our permanent residents who intend to seek summer recreation, do not intend go9ng further for it than half a day's or a day's ride from town.
The summer retreats of this part of the country will, we feel confident, be more largely visited than ever before, and exhibit a corresponding improvement in gaiety and happffness.
Building Improvements Underway
It is in the summer season that our fair city lays on her extra dabs of rouge--the rouge of brick and mortar—and extends her architectural proportions with the most perceptible rapfidity.
The prosperity of the city in the building way was never more pleasantly visible than at present. The suburbs are steadily filling up with handsome cottages as well as large styl9sh residences, and all over the city the work is going on of tearing down old buildings and putting up new. The builders seem to have plenty to do, and wear a cheerful and contented look.
Health
The health of the city continues excellent, and there is notfering to augur, in the coming months, a departure from the rule- of the last several summers--a state of health equal to that of any city in the United States.
To conclude--summer is here, and we welcome it .'
