January *+, 1871 At the late cold snap the orange trees at the Bay vere somewhat injured. There was a right smart snov storm on Friday, Dec. 23, 1870, an event that occurs here very seldom. December 2£, 1870 On Thursday, December 29] 1870, just before sunrise, vhile the eastern horizon vas effused vith a gorgeous rosy light, a rare spectacle corld have been seen by any early riser. Th^ v’hole of Ship Island and of the Louisiana marshes that are usually invisible from the beach at Bay St. Louis, stood out in bole, relief against the morning sky, and seemed to te only a fev rile? off. VJe could distinguish even particular trees, of whose location in the marshes ve vere avare. This.can only occur in a peculiar state of atmosphere, and vith a peculiar anple of daylight falling on the objects. The fev occ?sionr on vhich ve have seen Ship Island from Bay St. Louis occurred, as- on the morning above related, alvays just before sundovn.
