A Goodwill truck will be parked in Diamondhead Plaza from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. to collect non-perishable foods for the Hancock County Food Bank, paper products for Hope Haven and clothing, households, small appliances, bric-a-brac for Goodwill. From Saturday, Oct. 20 through Friday, Oct. 26, donations of paper products and non-perishable food items may be made to the Diamondhead branches of: • Whitney National Bank • Hancock Bank • The Peoples Bank • Hibernia Mortgage Banking Office • Diamondhead Supermarket The Goodwill Industries' donations provide jobs to coastal residents in materials processing, warehousing, transportation, retail sales, custodial work, shelf stocking, mail delivery, telephone operations and many other activities. Goodwill aims at giving people not charity, but a chance by giving them an opportunity to work. The donation of paper products (cups, plates, napkins, paper towels, and the like) to Hope Haven assist in the provision of a safe, local, sheltering environment for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. While Hope Haven is not a therapeutic program, its staff arranges through other com- munity programs for physical exams for children, intervention screening and counseling. On average, staff members are able to have a child back in school within three day of entering the program. Hancock County Food Pantry, an all-volunteer organization, exists to provide food and other non-food essentials to citizens of the county who are experiencing crisis situations. Referrals are received from area churches and local service providers. "We are delighted with the opportunity to marshal the many socially minded individuals and groups in Diamondhead," said Whitney Diamondhead Branch Manager Cindy Knoblock, "in a concerted effort to truly make a difference here in Hancock County."
