Honors and Awards
Dr. Ambrose was a consultant on Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg?s epic World War II movie. He was also a producer of the HBO miniseries, Band of Brothers, detailing the experiences of the members of the 101st Airborne Division also known as the ?Screaming Eagles.? He won Golden Globe and Emmy awards for his work on these films.
Other honors Dr. Ambrose received for his writing and civic contributions were the George Marshall Award, the Teddy Roosevelt Award, the Department of the Army Award for Distinguished Public Service, the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award, the Will Rogers Memorial Award, the Bob Hope Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and the National Humanities Award.
In 2000 Dr. Ambrose was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Public Service, the highest medal a civilian can receive from the Defense Department.
In the 2003 session of the Mississippi Legislature, House Bill 1095 was passed designating the
?Stephen Ambrose Memorial Highway?
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 2. (1) That portion of Interstate Highway 10 in Hancock County beginning at the Mississippi/Louisiana state line and extending easterly to its intersection with Mississippi Highway 43 is designated and shall be known as the ?Stephen E. Ambrose Memorial Highway.?
(2) The Mississippi Department of Transportation shall erect and maintain appropriate signs along and approaching that portion of highway described in subsection (1) of this section.
