ARTICLE XI
LOGTOWN, WAVELAND AND CLERMONT HARBOR CHURCHES
The writer plans in the last two articles of this series to give some information on the other Methodist Churches in Hancock County, and also on Gulfside Assembly, an institution of the United Methodist Church.
LOGTOWN METHODIST
Records of the Mississippi Conference Historical Society show the Logtown Methodist Church beginning in 1880.
About 1875, Mr. Henry Weston, prominent pioneer lumberman of the community, situated on the banks of the Pearl River, realized they should have a church.
He was instrumental in bringing to Logtown the Rev. Inman W. Cooper who although only 20 years of age had already shown promise in his chosen field.
After faithful service in churches of the conference, in later years Dr. Cooper was President of Whitworth College for Girls in Brookhaven.
After the loss of his first wife, he married Miss Janie Drake, a member of a well-known family in Hancock County who were originally from Church Hill, Miss.
The first church in Logtown was built by Mr. Weston and the H. Weston Lumber Company on land given by the family of Mr. Henry Carre1 of New Orleans.
The church was first known as Cooper's Chapel in honor of its first pastor who organized it.
When the saw mills were in full production, Logtown had a population of nearly 2,000.
Mr. J. S. Otis was Superintendent of the Sunday School for 43 years and Mr. Dave Weston for 20 years.	J
In all, 42 ministers served this church from 1880 to 1963, when NASA took over the area.
Coming in their younger years, often for only two year's service, many rose to positions of great responsibility in the Mississippi Conference, looking back with pleasure and gratitude for their time in Logtown.
WAVELAND UNITED METHODIST
Many years ago a small group of Methodist people began to meet in the Waveland area. Because of small numbers, they were unable to continue as a church. The property was sold for taxes and was purchased by a Mr. Holderith who held it for many years.
